Skateboarder Killed in Hit and Run

A man riding a skateboard was struck and killed by a driver in the early morning hours. The man was riding his skateboard on the sidewalk in the 5600 blocks of the North Freeway along the northbound I-45 frontage road. The vehicle that reportedly hit the man jumped the curb and struck him.

The man died at the scene. The driver left the scene of the accident and had not yet been apprehended. The driver was in a dark-colored vehicle and fled northbound along the frontage road.

The skateboarder was likely a Walmart employee because according to reports, he was carrying items that indicated he had just left work when the accident happened.

Pedestrian Accidents on the Rise in Houston

Pedestrian accidents are on the rise across the country. There are many reasons these accidents occur more frequently. One of the most common causes of pedestrian crashes is distracted driving. Distracted driving is one of the most dangerous forms of reckless driving, and along with drunk driving, is a common occurrence.

The Texas Department of Transportation publishes crash statistics annually. In 2017, there were 5,767 crashes involving pedestrians. Of that number, 604 fatal crashes resulted in 614 deaths. When a pedestrian, including skateboarders and rollerbladers, is involved in an accident with a car or truck, the pedestrian suffers serious injuries or is killed. Only 255 pedestrian crashes were reported in which no injuries were reported.

Houston Crime Stoppers

Here, as in many others, the person responsible for the crime left the scene and was not apprehended. Houston Crime Stoppers has asked the public for their help in locating the driver who struck and killed the skateboarder and fled the scene. Houston Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization dedicated to public safety. They have been in operation since 1980 and remain committed to helping prevent and solve crimes in the Houston area.

Houston Crime Stoppers partners with citizens, media, and the criminal justice system. They operate a tip line, and those who provide tips could be eligible to receive a cash reward. Besides a phone line, you can also offer tips online and through their mobile app. Anyone who witnessed the accident with the skateboarder, or any other crime, is encouraged to come forward to provide details.

Sometimes even minor information can help to solve a crime. Individuals can provide tips anonymously if they prefer. Tips from citizens have helped resolve many crimes and have brought many criminals to justice.

If you or a loved one was injured in a pedestrian accident, you could benefit from legal guidance. Call the police and seek medical attention. Allow your attorney to speak with the insurance company to ensure that the settlement will be appropriate for your injuries.
