DPS Investigates Fatal Trucking Accident
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident occurred between a Ford van, a semi-truck and a Ford F-250. The Ford van allegedly crashed into the back of the semi-truck and then lost control and careened across the median. The van then struck a Ford F250 head-on, traveling in the southbound lanes.
There were 10 people inside the van. Five people inside the van died as a result of their injuries. The driver and passenger of the F250 were taken to the hospital in stable condition. At least five others were transported to area hospitals. The truck driver was able to safely pull to the side of the road following the incident. The accident was being investigated to determine the cause.
About the Accident Investigation
Following an accident of this magnitude, a thorough investigation will need to take place. The investigation will focus on the cause of the accident and the actions of the drivers immediately before, during, and following the crash. At this time, it is not known why the driver of the van collided with the back of the semi-truck. The police generally conduct an investigation on the scene. They talk to witnesses, take driver statements, and review the physical damage to the vehicles. In fatal crashes, DPS will usually leave no stone unturned and digitally map the crash scene, download computer data and analyze the cause.
Sometimes, further investigation may be needed. An accident reconstruction expert may be required to help find out how the commercial vehicle accident occurred. The expert will review accident reports, witness statements, analyze the scene, and view vehicle damage. There is often more than one cause or contributing factor to a crash. Factors are generally categorized into three types including human error, mechanical malfunction, and outside conditions such as weather or road debris.
What to do After a Commerical Vehicle Accident
