Day Care Owner Allegedly Drugged Children

A day care center owner was recently charged with misdemeanor endangering children charges according to reports. The reports suggest that the daycare owner is alleged to have provided Benadryl and melatonin mixed with kids snacks in order to get them to be quiet or fall asleep.
The report further suggests that the kids had reported that the snacks tasted funny.
Benadryl is a over-the-counter medicine used for allergies and also for an over-the-counter sleep medication. Melatonin is an over-the-counter sleep aid and natural hormone.
The day care operator denies the charges. Typically, governmental entities charged with the duty of protecting children will investigate this type of allegation.
In Texas, the Department of Family and Protective Services investigates allegations of abuse or injury and day care centers. This story only amplifies the importance of parents doing research on any daycare center that they may be considering for their children. Even with the best and most diligent research, incidents still occur and children get injured.
Families looking for daycare help for their children should also consider a day care center as opposed to home care, as the day care centers are held to higher standards and required to carry liability insurance.
There is little as vulnerable as a child and great care should be taken on every level possible to protect children. In the case referenced above, the facts will be determined in a court of law and until that time the accused is entitled to a presumption of innocence.
Nevertheless, the story illustrates the importance of selecting a day care center you’re comfortable with. Many day care accidents occur when the caregiver simply does not give proper supervision to the children. However, stories of intentional abuse are not uncommon either.
Take great care in your selection of a caregiver for your children.
