A truck driver lost his life in an accident at Bayport Terminal in Southeast Harris County. The accident happened when a crane was trying to lift a container off the truck. The container was apparently still attached to the cabin, and the crane lifted the entire truck, including the cab where the truck driver was sitting. The driver was killed in the accident, although details of his death were not released by officials at the Port of Houston. No other injuries were reported. The incident is being investigated by authorities.
Crane safety is a serious concern. Crane accidents can occur, and when they do, they are likely to cause serious injuries or fatalities. Cranes are a necessary piece of equipment for construction and manufacturing companies. Cranes perform specific tasks that otherwise cannot be easily accomplished. According to the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), there were 220 fatal injuries involving cranes between 2011 and 2015. This averages to approximately 44 deaths a year. About half the accidents were the result of objects falling from the crane or the equipment falling.
About a quarter of fatal crane accidents happened at a construction site, while another quarter occurred at factories. In about 22% of the incidents, a worker was operating the crane at the time of the fatal accident. Texas is the state with the highest number of crane fatalities, with a total of 40 during the five years. This number is about as high as the next four states combined.
Crane Safety Standards
The United States Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), provides safety standards for cranes and other similar equipment. Specific requirements are in place for various industries, including marine terminals, longshore, construction, and general. In this instance, the accident occurred at a marine terminal. Cranes are used to move shipping containers to and from trucks and ships for transport. Companies must adhere to the OSHA requirements to keep employees safe and prevent injuries.
OSHA lists worker’s rights. Workers have the right to expect safe working conditions. They must be provided with training and information about workplace hazards for their particular industry. Workers also have the right to review records of workplace injuries. If a dangerous condition exists, you can file a complaint with OSHA. OSHA will inspect the workplace to evaluate whether the company is following OSHA rules. All reports remain confidential.
