Fatal accident in Houston

A 63-year-old construction worker is dead after being hit by a forklift. The construction accident happened in the Heights just after 7 a.m. The site has ongoing construction for an H-E-B grocery store. The incident happened when the forklift driver did not see or hear another construction worker who was standing nearby. The forklift operator hit the worker, who was rushed to the hospital. The construction worker died from his injuries.

Police and rescue crews responded to the accident. Initial reports indicate that the forklift driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident. The forklift operator’s son, who also works there, said the man was standing in a blind spot and could not be seen or heard. He also said that his father is devastated and that the two had worked together for years. No tickets were given, and no arrests were made.

Forklift Safety Concerns

Forklifts are utilized in a number of industries including construction. They are also found in large warehouses, factories, and commercial properties. Unfortunately, forklifts can be dangerous. They are known as powered industrial trucks and there are some important safety rules that must be followed when operating them.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA, has standards in place to address the safety concerns of forklifts in the workplace. Companies must ensure the safety of their employees at all times. They must provide safe working conditions including properly maintained forklifts. They must also provide adequate operational training to their workers before they are allowed to use a forklift.

Forklift operators must be at least 18 years of age. Companies should provide training to employees. Many outside organizations offer forklift training that will help ensure that workers follow the proper safety rules of operation. In addition, the company should utilize a daily checklist for powered industrial trucks.

If a company fails to provide proper training or supervision or does not adequately maintain their equipment, including forklifts, they could be considered negligent if an accident occurs. In this case we do not know whether the forklift driver was properly trained or whether there was a supervisor overseeing operations.
