Teen Texting Help

Teens are often correlated with reckless behavior, apathy, and overall irresponsibility.  Unfortunately, the sad reality is that this stereotype of teens often comes about because their behaviors are not monitored and an open line of communication is not established, causing many teenagers to act out.

In addition, one of the foremost behaviors that define teen behavior is texting.  On average teens spend more time texting than any other group.  Although this is often seen as a mostly harmless activity, there are still dangers parents should be aware of.  Teens and texting can sometimes lead to lewd conduct and behavior, reckless driving, poor sleep patterns and a host of other negative effects that can directly damage, or even seriously harm your teen.

However, it does not have to be this way.

There are many ways in which parents can help teens when it comes to texting:

  • Texting and Driving: Many teen drivers simply do not understand how dangerous teen driving can be. One of the most common misconceptions is that texting is safer because one is only looking at their phone for a short time.  However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.  Parents should make their teens aware that texting while driving can be 20 times more dangerous than driving alone.  In addition, texting while driving is often equivalent to closing one’s eyes for six to seven seconds on average.  Most teens know that closing their eyes while driving would be a very silly mistake to make, and thus, allowing them to make this connection will do well in helping them to conceptualize the dangers of texting while driving.
  • Texting and Sleep: Teens that use their phone after bedtime can end up giving themselves a host of sleep problems; from simple bouts of insomnia to full on sleep disorders. Teens should be aware that these problems can also lead to more serious issues.  The body needs rest, but staying up late to text can cause one to have eyes that are stuck on unnatural light as opposed to the darkness needed for sleep, can stay up later to the emotional state of the texts, and essentially cut into their own circadian rhythm.  It is important that parents establish rules for phones and bedtime.  For example, no texting after 10 p.m. during a school night and no texting after 11 p.m on weekends.
  • Sexting: This term essentially applies to any text message with sexually explicit content, whether it is simply lewd words or an outright naked picture. There are many different consequences that can arise from sexting: from making the recipient uncomfortable with said messages to actual laws that can be broken.  In addition any picture or text can then be saved or shown to anyone at anytime.  It is important that your teen is aware of these facts.
  • Cyberbullying: This is another modern term that refers to any act of bullying that does not occur face to face. If your teen is cyberbulled it is important to address the issue right away in order to prevent more emotional damage.  If your teen is the one using texts to bully it is important that you dole out consequences in order to prevent future transgressions.
