A crash involving at least six vehicles resulted in the deaths of two people and five injuries in Spring. The accident happened on Grand Parkway near FM 2920. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, witnesses said that a pickup truck traveling west on the Grand Parkway left its lane and drifted off the side of the road, smashing into a concrete wall. This caused the truck to careen across the median and into oncoming traffic traveling eastbound.
The pickup actually went airborne and crashed into a Lexus, sheering the top right off. It then crashed into a Chevy before making impact with three additional vehicles. The drivers of the Lexus and Chevy were both killed in the crash. Five additional people were hurt and were transported to Memorial Hermann Woodlands Hospital. The victims were said to have non-life-threatening injuries, although one was in serious condition and one in critical condition.
What Causes Drivers to Drift Off the Road?
There are many factors that could cause a driver to drift out of his or her lane of traffic. In this case, the driver drifted onto the shoulder. In some cases, a driver may be distracted and might not be paying attention to the road. Distracted driving is the result of taking your hands off the wheel, your eyes off the road, or your mind off the task of driving. Texting while driving is one of the most common and serious causes of distraction because it distracts you in all three ways.
Fatigue can cause drivers to drift out of their lanes if they nod off while behind the wheel. Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol can also cause poor driving. The driver could experience a medical emergency that causes him or her to lose control of the vehicle. In this particular case mentioned above, we do not know the reason the pickup driver veered off the roadway.
The driver in this case was likely negligent. Drivers are required to maintain proper control of their vehicles at all times. The driver survived the crash, so his statement will be important in determining the cause. Unfortunately, taking your eyes off the road for just a few seconds can change the lives of many forever.
